15th Annual New
Bern at Night Ghost Walk: "The Fabulous Fifties" October
20, 21, and 22, 2005 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Ghosts of the
1950's will haunt historic New Bern and Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Tickets $13.00 in advance; $16.00 on tour days. The Ghost Walk is
our favorite event each year and we highly recommend a two night
stay. There is too much to see in one evening.
Bountiful Harvest
Celebrations at Tryon Palace. Friday and Saturday, November 25
and 26, 2005 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Families will find lots of
activities to entertain both children and
adults. There will be candle making, basket demonstrations, and Punch
& Judy Puppet Shows (11 AM and 2 PM) on Saturday in the Stable
carriage bay. Cider
and cookies will be served throughout the day. Visitors to the Kitchen Office will
discover a beehive of activity
as the cooks prepare a holiday meal for Governor and Mrs. Tryon and
their guests. From 9AM
to 4PM - The Robert Hay House will also be the site of more
cooking, but of a different sort. Visitors will discover Union troops
preparing a Thanksgiving dinner.
Colonial Christmas Celebration. December
1, 2005 to January 4, 2006 (Twelfth Night). Come and
experience a
colonial Christmas featuring beautiful decorations, a
colonial militia encampment and captivating colonial characters.
Included in Tryon Palace admission. Note: Tryon Palace will
be closed on December 24 through December 26, 2005 and January 1, 2006.
A Civil War
Christmas at Tryon Palace. Saturday, December 3, 2005 from
9 AM to 5 PM. Free to Tryon Palace ticket holders. oin
Confederate and Union soldiers encamped on the Palace grounds as
they celebrate the war time Christmas of the 1860s. Activities include
camp cooking, military drill, musket demonstrations, Victorian
handcrafts, period music, and displays by living history re-enactors.
The Lion, The
Eagle, and Dixie (or Yankeedom to Secession). Saturday,
December 3, 2005 at 2 PM in the Tryon Palace Auditorium.
Fee: $4.00 or free with Tryon Palace ticket. Frank
Vizetelly, an 1860s correspondent for the Illustrated London
News, will deliver an exciting first-person account of events during
the War Between the States from the British perspective.
Christmas
Candlelight Tour and Fireworks Display. Saturday, December
10 and 17, 2005 from 5 PM to 9 PM. Fee: $15.00 adults;
$6.00 students. Visitors step back in time for an unforgetable
evening in colonial New
Bern in 1770. Governor and Mrs. Tryon are hosting a 'grand
entertainment and ball' to celebrate the completion of the Palace and
the birthday of King George III. The Palace is illuminated and filled
with elegant dancers and fascinating characters. New Bern's colonial
townspeople have also turned out to enjoy the festivities. Signora
Bella, the great Italian equilibrist, will perform amazing feats of
balance as the juggles sharp Turkish swords and flaming torches.
Children will enjoy the puppet show, Mr. Punch Meets Governor Tryon.
Costumed singers, dancers and musicians re-create Jonkonnu, an African
American Yuletide tradition. The evening's grand finale is a
spectacular fireworks display on the South Lawn. Visitors may take a
break and enjoy a free cup of hot cider or coffee at Barney's (a
colonial coffee house).

Tempest - Performed by the Carolina
Shakespeare Festival. Performances on Thursday, August 4, 11, and
18 at 7:00 PM, Friday and Saturday, August 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, and 20 at
8:00 PM, and Sunday, August 7, 14, and 21 at 2:00 PM.

- A contemporary
reflection on the parables of Christ brought to life through
spectacular music and a nontraditional cast of actors/clowns. MUSICAL
DRAMA. Performances on May 20, 21, 27, and 28 and June 3 and 4 at
8:00 PM. Sunday matinees on May 22 and 29 at 2:00 PM.

Graceland and The Old Maid and the Thief. Two shows in one! "Graceland," a one
act comedy, follows the budding friendship between two Elvis fans
camped out at the mansion gates of their recently departed idol. "The
Old Maid and the Thief," a light American opera, explores the lessons
of love in this slapstick tale of comedic irony concerning a spinster,
her maid, and a thief. COMEDY/LIGHT OPERA. Performances on August
19, 20, 26, and 27 and September 2 and 3 at 8:00 PM. Sunday
matinees on August 21 and 28 at 2:00 PM. Tickets: $16.00 in
advance; $18.00 at the door.
The King and I. An English widow accepts a live-in
position as governess to the children of the king of Siam and finds
both love and challenge in her new surroundings. MUSICAL FAMILY
ADVENTURE. Performances on November 4, 5, 11, 12, 17, 18, and 19

Tour. Offered on October 16, November 20, 2005 and

Meet in the Tryon Palace Visitor Center. Cost is $4.00 for adults;

Tryon Palace ticket holders and Tryon Palace Council of Friends.
Learn about 300 years of African American history on a walking tour of
New Bern's historic district. This tour lasts approximately 90
minutes and covers 16 blocks (good walking shoes recommended).

Needlework expert and Royal
School of Needlework graduate, Marion
Scoular, will present information and show examples of embroidery,
artwork, and dressmaking completed at the Royal School between
1952-1955. The Royal School of Needlework is recognized as the finest
for needlework technique in the world. The lecture will be followed by
a tour of embroidered pieces in the Tryon Palace collection.

Lecture: Black Slaveholders in North Carolina.
Thursday, November 17, 2005 at 7:00 PM in the Tryon Palace
Auditorium. Free. Dr. Darin Waters speaks about
slaveholding among free blacks in the United States in general and
North Carolina in particular, with highlights of the controversial
issues related to this little-known facet of American history.

The following events take place in areas close
to New Bern which would
be ideal for a short drive. Kinston, Morehead City and Oriental, NC are
all about a 30 minute drive. Atlantic Beach, Ayden, Harker's
Island, and Washington are about 45 minutes
from New Bern.
