Harmony House Inn, New Bern, North Carolina

the Harmony House Inn.
The Harmony House Inn, located in the Historic District of New Bern, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Harmony House Inn was purchased by Benjamin Ellis in 1850 from Francis Lamotte who had owned the house since 1809. The house began as a four-room, two-story Greek Revival home. As the Ellis family prospered, the house was expanded and porches were built and enclosed to accommodate their six children. Around the turn of the century the house was sawed in half, the west side was moved over nine feet, a new hallway and stairs were built (with Victorian influence) and a wall was built dividing the house into two sections.

The double front doors and hallways are the only hint of its strange architectural past. New Bern's history can be seen in framed photos from Harper's Weekly depicting the Battle of New Bern. The town fell to Union forces and served as their base of operations in eastern North Carolina for the duration of the war. The Harmony House was occupied by Company K of the 45th Massachusetts Regiment, who posed for a picture in front of the house in 1863.Ed and Sooki Kirkpatrick, who bought the inn in 1994, have added three new suites and extra amenities ensuring every modern comfort to this Historic Bed & Breakfast, but retained the homey touches.  Want to know more about the Kirkpatrick's?  Please click here to visit their personal home page. Harmony House is furnished with family photos, locally handcrafted furniture, and antiques, including an 1875 pump organ. The soft pastel colors of the walls set off the canopy beds and colorful comforters. Sooki's needlepoint flowers and "HH"-crocheted coasters give the house a personal touch. This unusually spacious house has seven guest rooms and three suites.  The romantic Eliza Ellis Suite has a king-sized bed and a two person, heart shaped jacuzzi in the bathroom.  The Benjamin  Ellis Suite is a two room suite with a sitting area and a separate bedroom. The bedroom, pictured at the left has a queen-sized canopy bed.  The sitting area has a queen-sized pullout sofa bed.  This arrangement is ideal for families.  Our newest suite completed in February 2000 is the William and Emily Suite.  This romantic suite has a four poster queen sized canopy bed and a two person, heart-shaped jacuzzi in the bathroom.  All of these lovely appointed spacious rooms are filled with antiques, some reproductions done by local craft persons and historic memorabilia. Each room, decorated by Sooki Kirkpatrick, exudes warmth, charm and individual character.

All rooms are furnished with full modern private baths, ceiling fans, central A/C, king, queen (some with canopies) and twin beds, cable television, telephones and decorative fireplaces. The Benjamin Ellis Suite boasts a living room with sleep sofa, two fireplaces and Queen Canopy Bed. Also offered is the romantic Eliza Ellis Suite, newly decorated with a king sized bed and jacuzzi in the bathroom.

Enjoy rest and relaxation on the grand porch with rocking chairs and swings overlooking the picturesque tree lined street. In the parlor every evening you are cordially invited to join Ed and Sooki for a complimentary social hour where wine, cheese, and soft drinks are offered along with the friendly conversation, warmth and hospitality that keeps you wanting to come back time and time again.

Dining RoomIn the morning you awaken to tantalizing aromas from the kitchen. Breakfast is a time for socializing in the dining room, where the Kirkpatricks lay out a different hot dish on the Empire sideboard each day: baked stuffed french toast; apple, bacon and cheddar quiche; or cheese strata, plus fruit, homemade granola, and homemade coffee cake. There's also juice, fresh ground coffee and an assortment of teas.

The Harmony House Inn is conveniently located within walking distance to quaint shops, fine dining restaurants, many historic sites, highlighted by Tryon Palace and its formal gardens.
