1. Heritage
Tour - Stroll through New Bern's Past.
Tryon Palace & Gardens: The original Georgian buildings of the Palace were constructed between 1767 and 1770 as a meeting place for the colonial assembly and as a residence for British Royal Governor William Tryon. Designed by English architect John Hawks, the Palace was praised for its elegance and beauty. John Wright Stanly House: On his southern tour in 1791, President Washington dined and danced at the Palace. But he spent two nights in this home, which he described as "exceeding good lodgings." New Bern Academy Museum: For 162 years the New Bern Academy was a leading school in the area. During the Civil War it was used as a general hospital for Union troops. Attmore-Oliver House: This c. 1790 home, headquarters for the New Bern Historical Society, exhibits 18th and 19th century furniture and New Bern historical objects, including Civil War artifacts. Fireman's Museum: This building houses steam pumpers and an extensive collection of other early fire fighting equipment along with rare photographs. (Temporarily closed). Over 150 Historical Landmarks: New Bern is the second oldest town in the state. History abounds around every corner, with homes representing a variety of architectural periods. 2. Walk along beautiful
East Front Street along the Neuse River. Enjoy lunch at one of the many fine restaurants found in downtown New Bern, then spend the afternoon perusing the specialty shops. 3. Spend the day Antique
shopping. New Bern is a hidden treasure for antique shoppers. Although the town does not have the reputation of other towns, there are over a dozen good shops within walking distance to the inn or a short drive. The hidden treasure of Historic New Bern's numerous Antique Shops is always a delightful surprise to visitors. 4. For
a change of pace, sail lazily
on our endless rivers. We recommend taking a charter from On The Wind Sailing School and Charter Services. Please phone them at (252) 322-5804. 5. Golf. On one of the excellent championship courses in the area. 6. Go for a hike. Don't forget to take your camera as you hike in the 157,000 acre Croatan National Forest bordering the Neuse River. Don't be surprised to see deer, black bears, red-cockaded woodpeckers, eagles, osprey, and a multitude of other wildlife sharing the day with you! 7. The Beach. Take a drive to the Crystal Coast where you will find beautiful white sandy beaches. Collect shells, swim, go sailing or surfing, watch dolphins, go sport fishing, golf on Emerald Isle, or just plain sun bathe! 8. CSS Neuse (State
Historic Site).
The CSS Neuse was one of twenty two ironclads commissioned by the Confederate Navy. Having a wide, flat bottom, the vessel resembled a river barge. You can visit the Neuse in Kinston, just a short drive from New Bern. Of note - the vessel participated in an attack on New Bern in late April, 1864.
